Summary
ArtQuake' tells the stories of 50 pivotal works that shook the world, telling the fascinating stories behind their creation, reception and legacy. Causing fascination and intrigue in some, repulse and scorn in others, these cutting-edge totems celebrated novelty and innovation and defined twentieth-century art. From Gustave Courbet's The Bathers (1853) to Marcel Duchamp's Fountain (1917); Yves Klein's Anthropology Performance (1960) to Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party (1974-79); Andres Serrano's Piss Christ (1987) to Banksy's Love is in the Bin (2018) - meet huge egos, uncompromising feminists, gifted recluses, spiritualists, anti-consumerists, activists, satirists and more. In telling the history of modern and contemporary art through the works that were truly disruptive, and explaining the context in which each was created, ArtQuake demonstrates the heart of modern art, which is to constantly question and challenge expectation. 0ArtQuake is an alternative introduction to modern art, focusing on the stories of 50 key artworks that questioned boundaries, challenged the status quo and made shockwaves we are still feeling today.

Summary
"In the first comprehensive study of Jewish identity and its meaning for the history of art, eleven influential scholars illuminate the formative role of Jews as subjects of art-historical discourse. At the same time, their essays introduce to art history the issue of cultural identity in the production of scholarship." "Offering a new approach in which the cultural identities of art makers and interpreters play a constitutive role, this collection begins a trenchant dialogue that will revise our understanding of scholarly work in modern art history, Jewish studies, and cultural studies."--Jacket.

Summary
With the help of over one hundred illustrations spanning three centuries, Richard Cohen investigates the role of visual images in European Jewish history. In these images and objects that reflect, refract, and also shape daily experience, he finds new and illuminating insights into Jewish life in the modern period. Pointing to recent scholarship that overturns the stereotype of Jews as people of the text, unconcerned with the visual, Cohen shows how the coming of the modern period expanded the relationship of Jews to the visual realm far beyond the religious context. In one such manifestation, orthodox Jewry made icons of popular tabbis, creating images that helped to bridge the sacred and the secular. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, the study and collecting of Jewish art became a legitimate and even passionate pursuit, and signaled the entry of Jews into the art world as painters, collectors, and dealers. Cohen's exploration of early Jewish exhibitions, museums, and museology opens a new window on the relationship of art to Jewish culture and society.
