Summary
"Biopics on artists have an enormous effect on the popular understanding of what it means to be an artist. Projected Art History highlights the narrative structure and images created in the film genre of biopics, in which the artist's life is being dramatized and embodied by an actor. Doris Berger bridges a gap between art history, film studies and popular culture by investigating how the film genre of biopics adapts written biographies and projects art history for a mass audience. Berger offers an analytical approach by concentrating on the two case studies Basquiat (1996) and Pollock (2000), but also looks at larger issues at play, such as how postwar American art history is being mediated in a popular format such as the biopic. This is the first book to identify the functionality of the biopic film genre and showcase its implication for a popular art history that is projected on the big screen"-- "Examines the biopics of two artists in order to represent and project a form of art history for a mass audience"--

Summary
"In Poetry, Pictures, and Popular Publishing eminent Rossetti scholar Lorraine Janzen Kooistra demonstrates the cultural centrality of a neglected artifact: the Victorian illustrated gift book. Turning a critical lens on "drawing-room books" as both material objects and historical events, Kooistra reveals how the gift book's visual/verbal form mediated "high" and popular art as well as book and periodical publication. A composite text produced by many makers, the poetic gift book was designed for domestic space and a female audience; its mode of publication marks a significant moment in the history of authorship, reading, and publishing. With rigorous attention to the gift book's aesthetic and ideological features, Kooistra analyzes the contributions of poets, artists, engravers, publishers, and readers and shows how its material form moved poetry into popular culture. Drawing on archival and periodical research, she offers new readings of Eliza Cook, Adelaide Procter, and Jean Ingelow and shows the transatlantic reach of their verses. Boldly re-situating Tennyson's works within the gift-book economy he dominated, Kooistra demonstrates how the conditions of corporate authorship shaped the production and reception of the laureate's verses at the peak of his popularity. Poetry, Pictures, and Popular Publishing changes the map of poetry's place--in all its senses--in Victorian everyday life and consumer culture"-- "Poetry, Picture, and Popular Publishing demonstrates the cultural centrality of a neglected artifact: the Victorian Illustrated gift book. Summary
"The body as an object of critical study dominates disciplines across the humanities to such an extent that a new discipline has emerged: body criticism. In Getting Under the Skin, Bernadette Wegenstein traces contemporary body discourse in philosophy and cultural studies to its roots in twentieth-century thought - showing how psychoanalysis, phenomenology, cognitive science, and feminist theory contributed to a new body concept - and studies the millenial body in performance art, popular culture, new media arts, and architecture."--Jacket.

Summary
A personal and cultural mediation, Philip D. Beidler's The Island Called Paradise explores the fascinating ways Cuban history and culture have permeated North American consciousness, and vice versa. In The Island Called Paradise, Philip D. Beidler shares his personal discovery of the vast, rich, and astonishing history of the island of Cuba and the interrelatedness of Cuba and the US. Cuba first entered Beidler's consciousness in the early 1960s when he watched with mesmerized anxiety the televised reports of the Cuban missile crisis, a conflict that reduced a multifaceted, centuries-old history.
