Summary
"Built in 1853 in New York's Bryant Park and immediately pronounced the most beautiful structure in America, the Crystal Palace was intended not simply to emulate but rival the famous Victorian landmark in London's Hyde Park. As with its English counterpart, however, its beauty was ephemeral. It caught fire, and on October 5, 1858, "great waves of lurid light" overtook spectators and those rushing to save it. Within thirty minutes, the beloved dome was nothing but a heap of smoldering debris. In his latest book, Edwin G. Burrows, winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for History and co-author of GOTHAM: A History of New York to 1898, offers a memorable and elegiac look at the Crystal Palace. While it didn't match in dimension Robert Paxton's London original--the scale of which was truly colossal--the New York version became a beloved landmark almost from the instant of its creation. Centerpiece of the 1853 World's Fair, it was home to numerous exhibitions and became a showplace for displaying the growing industrial might of the nation. Walt Whitman rhapsodized about it as "Earth's modern wonder, History's Seven outstripping." Its sudden loss provoked intense mourning-matched only perhaps by the razing of the old Penn Station a century later-and then gradually it slipped from memory. The Finest Building in America will evoke the Crystal Palace's life and times, replete with beautiful period images. The first book-length account of the building's short but glorious life, Burrows book aims to restore it in the minds and hearts of New Yorkers and New York aficionados and fans everywhere"--

Summary
This concluding part of "Building a House" focuses on the construction and finishing of the interior of a wood-frame house. Students will see the installation of plumbing and drainage pipes throughout the house. Hot water radiant floor heating is installed, then the electricians string cables and install fixtures. Glass fibre insulation comes next, then gyprocking and paint. A variety of floors are installed: marble tile, pre-finished hardwood, and carpet.

Summary
Much attention has been given to the increasing number of defects on building facades in relation to the construction industry's growing use of large panel curtain walls. This book highlights the various types of defects commonly found on building facades under tropical conditions. The facade elements discussed include natural stone, glass, metal sheeting, plaster and tiling. The causes of defects, such as poor workmanship, inadequate design and maintenance, inappropriate use of materials and the action of environmental agents, are evaluated. The typical problems highlighted include cracking, water penetration, misalignment, sealant defects, discoloration, staining, efflorescence, corrosion and tile delamination. The causes of these defects and their implications for design, construction and maintenance are described. Illustrated with many photographs, this book will be a useful guide both to practising professionals and to undergraduate and graduate students.

Summary
Polyimides are very durable, easy to machine and have exceptional heat and chemical resistance. They are also highly insulative and do not contaminate their surroundings. Their strength and heat and chemical resistance are so great that they are often used to replace glass and metals, such as steel, in many demanding industrial applications. Polyimides are even used in many everyday applications. They are used in cars both externally and internally because they can withstand the intense heat and the corrosive lubricants, fuels, and coolants found in cars. They are also used in the construction of many appliances as well as microwave cookware and food packaging because of their thermal stability, resistance to oils, greases, and fats and their transparency to microwave radiation. They can also be used in circuit boards, insulation, fibres for protective clothing, composites, and adhesives. This report covers the synthesis of polyimides from chloral and trinitrotoluene and reviews the production of new types of polyimides combining good thermal, mechanical and electrical properties with improved processability. It is ideal for those who work with polyimides, either producing them or those using them to manufacture other goods. It will be of interest to those in both academia and industry.

Summary
"Sand Wars is a surprising investigation into one of the most consumed natural resources on the planet. Due to the high demand for sand, the planet?s reserves are being threatened. Three-quarters of the world?s beaches are in decline and bound to disappear as victims of erosion, or of sand smuggling. Triggered by building construction, smuggling bands, or ?sand mafias,? plunder beaches and rivers for this highly prized commodity. Sand has quietly infiltrated every corner of our world. Melted and transformed into glass, it sits on every shelf. It is also the source of silicon dioxide, a mineral found in our wines, cleaning products and detergents, paper, dehydrated foods, toothpaste, cosmetics and an astounding variety of other products we use on a daily basis. Houses, skyscrapers, bridges, airports, and sidewalks are all partially comprised of sand. It is an elementary particle that is the foundation of our modern development. Sand is seen as a free material, a staple of holidays spent on the shore, in unlimited supply. But is this omnipresent material inexhaustible? Can the available quantity match an ever-increasing demand that is constantly fed by the need for human lodging and expansion? What will be the consequences of sand extraction on the environment and life on the planet? Sand Wars will take us around the world to witness this new gold rush firsthand." - From website.

Summary
It started with a simple observation: Students need their teachers present to answer questions or to provide help if they get stuck on an assignment; they don't need their teachers present to listen to a lecture or review content. From there, Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams began the flipped classroom: Students watched recorded lectures for homework and completed their assignments, labs, and tests in class with their teacher available. Bergmann and Sams found that their students demonstrated a deeper understanding of the material than ever before. Learn what a flipped classroom is and why it works, and get the information you need to flip your own classroom. --from publisher description.
