Summary
Where were you born? Were you born at the Beth? Many thousands of Americans--Jewish and non-Jewish--were born at a hospital bearing the Star of David and named Beth Israel, Mount Sinai, or Montefiore. Newark Beth Israel Hospital is a distinguished modern medical institution in New Jersey whose history opens a window on American health care, the immigrant experience, the religious impulse for health care, and urban life. Alan and Deborah Kraut tell the story of this important institution, illuminating the broader history of voluntary nonprofit hospitals created under religious auspices initially.

Summary
This book reports on a theoretical and empirical study of spiritual care as a profession in health care, particularly from the angle of quality care. Theoretically the central issues in spiritual care are analysed: quality care, medicalisation and contingency as its limit, the function of worldviews in health care, personal identity, legitimacy and position in health care, goals and tasks of the profession. Specific attention is spent to the determinants of the goals in the interaction with patients. Empirically the attitudes of Dutch spiritual caregivers towards these issues are investigated. The book provides insight into the professional discipline 'spiritual care' and discusses some challenges for the future: the intrinsic meaning of the plurality of worldviews within spiritual care, the institutional aspects of this spiritual care and the educational implications of spiritual care as a professional discipline. The book is particular useful for spiritual caregivers in their reflection on their practice and for education of future spiritual caregivers.

Summary
This book offers an overview of key elements of the hospital -- its structure, administration, and its functioning. Students and new clinicians may be so focused on mastering specific clinical skills that they have little time to observe or question the whole process of care. This book looks beyond acute disease to the environment of care, how it works, how it doesn't work, and how it might improve. Issues discussed include understanding and communicating with families, the basics of hospital finance, how dangerous hospitalization can be to the elderly, and how to minimize errors. Medical stud.
