Summary
Why are some people great leaders? Are leaders born or made? These great questions are explored and answered. Individuals in all sorts of situations and positions within society can provide real leadership, provided they have the opportunity and the desire to do so. It takes a willingness to try and some good social skills, but individuals can lead others to action. It requires effort and determination but, in the right circumstances, great things are possible.

Summary
Change is healthy and, for any organisation with its sights set on the future, it is essential for growth and success. But despite this, there is often a great deal of resistance to change, invariably because people are fearful of the uncertainty and stress that will follow in its wake. Overcoming these problems by managing change is an important skill for any company. Chapter 1: Own the Change. Own change by being fully committed and believing in its benefits. If you're only 50% committed you can expect much less from everyone else. Chapter 2: Champions. Champions are people who can help you manage change smoothly. Once they're on-board, they'll do everything they can to help you. Chapter 3: Resisters. Resisters reject the initial concept of change; not out of ignorance, but usually out of fear of the unknown. Chapter 4: Gatekeepers. Gatekeepers are people with the authority to implement change. You'll need to convince them of the benefits the change will bring in a language they understand. Chapter 5: Perseverance. When everything seems to be going wrong, perseverance isn't necessarily something that comes easy. Stay focussed on the end results.

Summary
"The modern hospital represents a complex community in which life and death decisions are made on the front lines of patient care, and difficult operational and strategic initiatives are developed in the offices of institutional leaders. Effective Medical Leadership describes the unusual position of a medical leader in an organization often administered by non-medical managers. Through extensive and situational examples in the complex hospital setting, Dr. Bryce Taylor illuminates the principles of leadership, focusing on the challenges, the solutions, and the daily life of the head of a division, department, or program. In hospitals, just as in other large organizations, effective leaders must appreciate the big picture, pay attention to detail, and, above all, care about the careers of their constituents in addition to patient health. Here, Taylor outlines successes as well as failures, emphasizing that leadership, while an imperfect science, is based on common sense, integrity, an orientation to the welfare of colleagues, and a passionate and consistent commitment to the mission of an organization."--Pub. desc.
