Summary
This book summarises approaches and current practices in actinide immobilisation using chemically-durable crystalline materials such as ceramics and monocrystals. As a result of the increasing worldwide growth of the nuclear industry, long-lived [symbol]-emitting actinides such as Pu, Np, Am and Cm are fast becoming a serious environmental concern - actinide-bearing wastes have accumulated in different countries due to nuclear weapons production. On the other hand, as actinides are chemical elements with unique properties they could be beneficially used for humankind in areas such as medicine and technology. Durable actinide-containing materials are attractive for various applications. These include in chemically-inert sources of [symbol]-irradiation used for a variety of functions such as energy sources for unmanned space vehicles and microelectronic devices, as well as hosts for nuclear waste and in nuclear fuels to burn excess Pu. Unfortunately, there is currently no appropriate balance between safe actinide disposal and use, even though both processes require their immobilisation in a durable host material. Thus, the choice of an optimal actinide immobilisation route is often a great challenge for specialists. Although a wealth of information exists about actinide properties in many publications, little has been published summarising currently accepted approaches and practices for actinide immobilisation. Crystalline Materials for Actinide Immobilisation fills this gap using information based on the authors' first-hand experience and studies in nuclear materials management and actinide immobilisation.

Summary
"Free will is a key but contested concept in the work of Jean-Jacques Rousseau: while the famed philosopher is known to have asserted that free will distinguishes human beings from animals, several interpreters have argued that he merely pretends to have this belief for the sake of healthy politics and to avoid persecution by religious authorities. Through careful readings of key texts and letters, The Free Animal offers a new and original exploration of Rousseau's views on free will, just in time for the 200th anniversary of his birth. Lee MacLean shows that Rousseau needs and uses the idea of human consciousness of free will to explain the development of morality, convention, and vice. MacLean bases her argument on a broad range of texts, from canonical works to Rousseau's untranslated letters and drafts. Featuring careful analyses and an extensive engagement with the secondary literature, The Free Animal offers a novel interpretation of the changing nature and complexity of Rousseau's intention."--Pub. desc.

Summary
"How often does a novel earn its author both the Presidential Medal of Freedom, awarded to Harper Lee by George W. Bush in 2007, and a spot on a list of "100 best gay and lesbian novels"? Clearly, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning tale of race relations and coming of age in Depression-era Alabama, means many different things to many different people ... Holly Blackford invites the reader to view Lee's beloved novel in parallel with works by other iconic American writers--from Emerson, Whitman, Stowe, and Twain to James, Wharton, McCullers, Capote, and others. In the process, she locates the book amid contesting literary traditions while simultaneously exploring the rich ambiguities that define its characters."--Publisher site.

Summary
A new way to look at hunting and deer meat that anyone who owns a venison cookbook must read! Is a doe better eating than a buck? Is hanging really necessary? Why can't venison be aged? Will soaking in milk make that gamy taste go away? The Hunter's Haunch provides straightforward and fascinating answers for these and other questions that every hunter-cook has faced, delving into myths, folklore, hunting history, and modern culinary science in order to explain why certain techniques still work and others don't. Many wild game cookbooks offer recipes for venison chili, venison burgers, venison sausage, and other solutions that make tough and gamy meat edible. By contrast, The Hunter's Haunch aims to rethink the entire process so that rescuing tough meat never becomes necessary in the first place. Focusing on the relationship of the hunt to the rhythms of nature, The Hunter's Haunch examines the deer as a living creature in the wild, showing how the skills of the hunter affect its treatment in the kitchen, and ultimately how the venison tastes when served at the table. Covering the history of deer hunting, practical lessons in game anatomy, and indispensable tips for dressing and prep, The Hunter's Haunch is an essential read for anyone who hopes to transform their quarry into the best possible venison. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for hunters and firearms enthusiasts. We publish books about shotguns, rifles, handguns, target shooting, gun collecting, self-defense, archery, ammunition, knives, gunsmithing, gun repair, and wilderness survival. We publish books on deer hunting, big game hunting, small game hunting, wing shooting, turkey hunting, deer stands, duck blinds, bowhunting, wing shooting, hunting dogs, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
