Summary
Military post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common and disabling consequence of war, terrorism and natural disasters which presents an increasing problem for service men and women around the world. It has been shown that those who serve in both combat missions and peacekeeping operations are at greater risk of developing PTSD as a result of the 'wounds of war'. These wounds may take the obvious form of physical disabilities, but 'invisible' wounds, such as depression, anxiety, stress and chronic pin may also lead to an increased risk of PTSD. This book presents full papers, focused on the key presentations from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop, Wounds of War: Coping with Posttraumatic Stress in Returning Troops, held in October 2009. These papes critically assess existing knowledge in the field and identify directions for future action. The book addresses the five key issues of PTSD: vulnerability, diagnosis and assessment, prevention, treatment and associated disorders. While PTSD may be an inisible illness, its effects are certainly not invisible. Countries must work together to develop prevention and treatment strategies which ensure that service men and women everywhere are able to assimilate back into society to lead productive lives and ejoy the freedom they fought to protect. The purpose of this book is to contribute to this process.

Summary
Psychic trauma is as old as mankind itself, but it is still not fully understood how or why the exposure to single or multiple horrific events can overwhelm some people to the extent that they are haunted day and night by the terrible things they have witnessed. Most will recover spontaneously, but others become victims of the most common psychological disorder stemming from such an experience: post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is estimated that 8% of the Western population suffer from this disordr, and that 40% of them will continue to suffer from symptoms even ten years after the trigger event. For many years it was believed that there was no remedy for those suffering from severe psychic trauma, but in the last decade a major breakthrough has sen the development of new and effective therapy methods. Regaining a sense of control is key to helping clients suffering from PTSD and its accompanying disorders. The authors of this book have spent many years working in the field. Here they distill thos elements common to all the accepted methods of treatment, and they add the unique aspect of imagination and fantasy, described in a concept they call Fantastic Reality. Whilst not claiming to have a remedy or solution for every sufferer, this book will hlp to provide solutions for some of the aspects lacking in other models. This book will prove a valuable addition to the resources of all those who work in this field, where effective treatment, though much needed, is still scarce.

Summary
Waking the Tiger offers a new and hopeful vision of trauma. It views the human animal as a unique being, endowed with an instinctual capacity to heal as well as an intellectual spirit to harness this innate capacity. It asks and answers an intriguing question - why are animals in the wild, though threatened routinely, rarely traumatized? By understanding the dynamics that make wild animals virtually immune to traumatic symptoms, the mystery of human trauma is revealed. Waking the Tiger normalizes the symptoms of trauma and the steps needed to heal them.

Summary
A central thesis of this volume is that what human beings cannot contain of their experience - what has been traumatically overwhelming, unbearable, unthinkable - falls out of social discourse, but very often onto and into the next generation, as an affective sensitivity or a chaotic urgency. What appears to be a person's symptom may turn out to be a symbol - in the context of this book, a symbol of an unconscious mission - to repair a parent or avenge a humiliation - assigned by the preceding generation. These tasks may be more or less idiosyncratic to a given family, suffering its own person.

Summary
In this book the author relates the stories of how American veterans and their families navigate the return home. For many of the 1.6 million U.S. service members who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001, the trip home is only the beginning of a longer journey. Many undergo an awkward period of readjustment to civilian life after long deployments. Some veterans may find themselves drinking too much, unable to sleep or waking from unspeakable dreams, lashing out at friends and loved ones. Over time, some will struggle so profoundly that they eventually are diagnosed with post-traumatic stress Disorder (PTSD). Following a group of veterans and their personal stories of war, trauma, and recovery, the author illustrates the devastating impact PTSD can have on veterans and their families, their loved ones, and their communities. He explores issues of substance abuse, failed relationships, domestic violence, and even suicide and also challenges popular ideas of PTSD as incurable and permanently debilitating. Drawing on ethnographic material, he examines the cultural, political, and historical influences that shape individual experiences of PTSD and how its sufferers are perceived by the military, medical personnel, and society at large. Despite widespread media coverage and public controversy over the military's response to wounded and traumatized service members, debate continues over how best to provide treatment and compensation for service-related disabilities. Meanwhile, new and highly effective treatments are revolutionizing how the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides trauma care, redefining the way PTSD itself is understood in the process. Untangling each of these conflicts, the book reveals the very real implications they have for veterans living with PTSD and offers recommendations to improve how we care for this vulnerable but resilient population. -- From publisher's website.
