Summary
As a probation officer and social worker, Anne Bannister has successfully used creative therapies with abused children for 25 years. Combining her practical experience and recent doctoral research she reflects on how and why these therapies actually work in the healing process. She shows how in 'the space between' children and their therapists, the child and adult can each use their creative skills to aid developmental processes, reverse negative brain patterns and affect positive behavioural changes to heal the damage caused by severe abuse in childhood. The author presents a practical model.

This book uses an evidence-based CBT treatment model to assist children and adolescents aged 9-15 years to resolve trauma symptoms and increase their coping skills. The approach is made up of 16 step-by-step sessions to carry out with the young person, and includes worksheets and fun activities using arts and crafts. The model uses four phases: strengthening the chil.

Summary
What happens when a child experiences bereavement or trauma or both? When left untreated, childhood trauma crosses generational boundaries, developing risk factors that far outpace the threat of any other childhood disease, and yet, most children who have lived through a significant traumatic experience, usually do not get the care they need to begin their healing process. Children who have experienced trauma are often left grappling with devastating loss - loss of self esteem, security, innocence and trust - that is more challenging to diagnose and treat, than the more concrete loss of family, a pet or a home. Loss, Hurt and Hope: The Complex Issues of Bereavement and Trauma in Children gathers the collective wisdom of professionals who have spent years on the front lines working with children victimized by trauma. Each chapter illuminates how loss can shape a child's development and provides professionals with the tools necessary to help these children move from despair to hope and renewal. Experts in the field of child trauma explore the vulnerability of these children, effective methods of caring for them in a variety of treatment settings, and examine the impact of loss on organizations charged with caring for those who have experienced trauma. Loss, Hurt and Hope offers a multifaceted lens through which loss can be examined and appreciated, laying the groundwork for significant progress toward improving the understanding of the power of loss in our society.

Summary
"Traumatic brain injury (TBI), afflicting approximately one third of injured veterans returning from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, is considered the signature injury in these conflicts. In addition to TBI, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depression often afflict these veterans and contribute to neurological symptoms. This is the first volume to provide a comprehensive overview of neuropsychologically grounded assessment, treatment, training, and trends for clinicians who work with this population. Encompassing the writings of clinicians and researchers experienced in working with the Veterans Administration (VA) population, the book is grounded in an understanding of the unique culture of the veteran with its specialized service delivery methods and procedures. In addition to its focus on veterans with TBI, the text also addresses the assessment and treatment of aging veterans of previous military conflicts and of combat and non-combat veterans with neurological and emotional problems related to aging, substance abuse, HIV/hepatitis, psychiatric disorders, and other problems"--Provided by publisher.

Summary
Military post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common and disabling consequence of war, terrorism and natural disasters which presents an increasing problem for service men and women around the world. It has been shown that those who serve in both combat missions and peacekeeping operations are at greater risk of developing PTSD as a result of the 'wounds of war'. These wounds may take the obvious form of physical disabilities, but 'invisible' wounds, such as depression, anxiety, stress and chronic pin may also lead to an increased risk of PTSD. This book presents full papers, focused on the key presentations from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop, Wounds of War: Coping with Posttraumatic Stress in Returning Troops, held in October 2009. These papes critically assess existing knowledge in the field and identify directions for future action. The book addresses the five key issues of PTSD: vulnerability, diagnosis and assessment, prevention, treatment and associated disorders. While PTSD may be an inisible illness, its effects are certainly not invisible. Countries must work together to develop prevention and treatment strategies which ensure that service men and women everywhere are able to assimilate back into society to lead productive lives and ejoy the freedom they fought to protect. The purpose of this book is to contribute to this process.

Summary
"Many changes in students' performance and behavior stem from the emotional and behavioral problems that they may experience following such traumas as witnessing violence, undergoing assault or abuse, living through natural disasters, or experiencing acts of terrorism. This paper groups the programs to help support the long-term recovery of traumatized students according to the kinds of trauma they address, and describes how to select students for a program. Finally, it gives a one-page summation of each program selected. This summation describes the objective, intended population, and format of the program and provides details on implementation, personnel training and materials, and contact information."--Source other than the Library of Congress.
