Summary
"An account of Boye's experiences building and occupying alternative, sustainable houses"-- "Living simply isn't always simple. When Alan Boye first lived in sustainable housing, he was young, idealistic, and not much susceptible to compromise--until rattlesnakes, black widow spiders, and loneliness drove him out of the utilities-free yurt he'd built in New Mexico. Thirty-five years later, he decided to try again. This time, with an idealism tempered by experience and practical considerations, Boye and his wife constructed an off-the-grid, energy-efficient, straw bale house in Vermont. Sustainable Compromises chronicles these two remarkable attempts to live simply in two disparate American eras. Writing with hard-won authority and humor, Boye takes up the 'how-to' practicalities of 'building green, ' from finances to nuts and bolts to strains on friends and family. With Walden as a historical and philosophical touchstone and his own experience as a practical guide, he also explores the ethical and environmental concerns that have framed such undertakings from Thoreau's day to our own. A firsthand account of the pleasures and pitfalls of living simply, his book is a deeply informed and engaging reflection on what sustainability really means--in personal, communal, ethical, and environmental terms"--

Summary
This book is based on research and observations undertaken for the authors PhD thesis at the National University of Ireland, and represents a case study of national and regional campaigns against both the Irish states Regional Waste Management Plans and the corporate sectors attempts to develop waste incinerators or dumps in various parts of Ireland. This book provides an in depth account of the mobilizing patterns and framing processes of community campaigns which emerged in the wake of the Irish states introduction of regional plans for waste management, which included plans for municipal waste to energy plants or incinerators. It is the only book with a sole focus on this aspect of Irish society during the Celtic Tiger boom which preceded the current economic downturn, and examines policy, population, development social issues and local and national electoral processes in detail at a time of immense change in the Republic of Ireland. As such, it provides a salient insight into the societal shifts which provide opportunities for social movements to oppose state or corporate plans which may be perceived to have human health or environmental risks associated with them.

Summary
On a global scale, we produce more food than we are able to consume. However, millions of people in the world go hungry every day. Nevertheless, we can tackle the issue by raising awareness and concentrating on food aid. The challenge is not only to feed the world, but above all to educate it. This plan of attack has been adopted by Jean-François Archambault (Montreal, Quebec), Joyce Rock (Vancouver, British Columbia) and dumpster divers in Montreal.
