LeBuhn (San Francisco State Univ.) presents an excellent overview of the bee genera encountered in California and bordering states. Fully illustrated by Pugh, the book provides useful depictions of some 30 native bee genera and species. In addition to these valuable illustrations, readers will appreciate the accompanying technical information--a general description of the bees, habits, plants they pollinate, similar-looking species, how they nest, and their flight season and range. The practical introduction connects people to the bees by presenting the services they provide and by offering suggestions on how people can help them to continue giving such services. One appendix shows the family and genera in California, while another will help readers identify the several genera mentioned in the book through characteristics of their females. A helpful glossary and an index complement this well-written work. Part of the "California Natural History Guides" series, the book will be appreciated by everyone interested in gardening and those who want to know more about biodiversity.
