Imperialism is a transnational and transhistorical phenomenon; it occurs neither in limited areas nor at one specific moment. In cultures from across the world theatrical performance has long been a site for both the representation and support of imperialism, and resistance and rebellion against it. Imperialism and Theatre is a groundbreaking collection which explores the questions of why and how the theatre was selected within imperial cultures for the representation of the concerns of both the colonizers and the colonized. Gathering together fifteen noted scholars and theatre practitioners, this collection spans global and historical boundaries and presents a uniquely comprehensive study of post-colonial drama. For the past 30 years, theater writing has increasingly focused on religious and social concerns (particularly race and gender), cross-cultural issues, and political resistance and protest. These concerns have been reflected not only in the plays produced but in the dramatic criticism and in the loudly articulated and publicized goals of numerous national and regional theater movements--particularly in Third World nations. Patrice Pavis's Theatre at the Crossroads of Culture (CH, Oct'92), Sumita Chakravarty's National Identity in Indian Cinema, 1947-1987 (CH, May'94), and Phyllis Zatlin's Cross-Cultural Approaches to Theatre (CH, Oct'94) are only a few of the recent books that return to the idea that performing arts must be useful--that entertainment is not enough. Gainor (Cornell Univ.) has collected 15 short essays that reflect many of the concerns in current theater. Particularly strong are the first and last essays, "Vietnamese Theatre of Resistance" and "Strategies for Survival."
