Religion has jumped into the sphere of global and domestic politics in ways that few would have imagined a century ago. Some expected that religion would die as modernity flourished. Instead, it now stares at us almost daily from the front pages of newspapers and television broadcasts. Although it is usually stories about the Christian Right or conservative Islam that grab headlines, there are many religious activists of other political persuasions that are working quietly for social justice. This book examines how religious immigrants and religious activists are working for equitable treatment for immigrants in the United States.

The essays in this book analyze the different ways in which organized religion provides immigrants with an arena for mobilization, civic participation, and solidarity. Contributors explore topics including how non-Western religious groups such as the Vietnamese Caodai are striving for community recognition and addressing problems such as racism, economic issues, and the politics of diaspora; how interfaith groups organize religious people into immigrant civil rights activists at the U.S.-Mexican border; and how Catholic groups advocate governmental legislation and policies on behalf of refugees.

Choice Review

As the Civil Rights Movement mobilized progressive forces within Christianity in the US during the 1960s, so too in recent years has the movement for immigrant social justice. These 13 articles explore this phenomenon both sociologically and theologically. Editor Hondagneu-Sotelo and Rhys Williams frame the book in their introductory chapters, exploring a "standpoint theory" of justice and locating religious liberalism in terms of cultural history. Four chapters address issues related to civic engagement, including Karen Leonard's brief analysis of changes in the Muslim community since 9/11. The next section's three chapters focus on activists working for immigrant rights on the US-Mexican border. Here, Cecilia Menjivar's analysis of "faith workers" combating violence directed against immigrants stands out. The two papers in the following section shift to organizational analysis, while the concluding two chapters are concerned in different ways with the matter of redemption--one concerned with a Catholic theology of immigration and the other with identity construction among devotees of Caodai, a new Vietnamese religion. As is typical in such collections, the chapters are uneven. Nonetheless, the book merits the attention of those concerned with immigrants and religion. Summing Up: Recommended.
