For over twenty-five years Ronald Inglehart and his colleagues have been collecting survey data on the beliefs and opinions of people all over the world on a variety of topics. This work led Inglehart to expound his noted theory about the development of post-materialist values in developed countries and explore its effect on politics. This book, based on the most comprehensive of these surveys, the World Values Survey conducted in over forty countries from 1990-93, publishes for the first time all of the findings of this survey. The questions cover issues such as politics, economics, religion, family life, and gender roles, and reflect differences in response by age, gender, economic standing, and education.

Statistical source books such as the Statistical Abstracts of the United States are usually dull. Not this one! Inglehart (Univ. of Michigan), the principal author, has written extensively about the "shift from 'Materialistic' values, emphasizing economic and physical security, to 'Postmaterialist' values, emphasizing individual self-expression and quality of life concerns," in The Silent Revolution (1977) and more recently in Modernization and Postmodernization (1997). He and his associates have created an extremely interesting and useful source for using the findings of the World Values Survey conducted in 42 countries from 1990 to 1993. An informative introduction clearly explains how and why value systems change as society moves from traditional to modem to postmodern systems. The authors examine cross-national opinions on more than 350 variables that measure political, economic, social, and cultural values in terms of gender, age, income, and educational level. The data is also arrayed in ways that permit limited secondary analyses. The original questionnaire and technical information about sampling and fieldwork are included, together with a lengthy list of publications that draw on this data.
