Hodgson's entertaining ideas range from elegant French dinners in multiple courses to simple and quickly prepared meals that require a minimum of effort from the skilled cook. The author employs all the currently fashionable cuisines, her menus consisting of first-course pizzas, grilled fish and meats, and fresh fruit desserts. Italian influences abound, with all menus tending to use plenty of garlic. Hodgson clearly delights in throwing dinner parties, and she wisely reminds her readers that fretting over details is useless because people come to one's home for free food, making the host's apologies pointless.
