Food, Farming, and Faith looks at agricultural sustainability and Christianity. Using scripture and science, Gary W. Fick a Christian agricultural scientist demonstrates that faith can inform decisions about creating, managing, even consuming our food. The book highlights such topics as food and celebration, environmental care, ecology and faith, soil and water stewardship, animal welfare, and the impact of poverty on women and our food supply. Throughout, Fick presents and discusses biblical passages that comment on these areas and provides insight from personal experiences growing up in a ranching family, in teaching sustainable agriculture, and as a scientist. Ultimately, Fick challenges the reader to think about eating more thoughtfully so that we have good food, a healthy environment, and a comfortable lifestyle all at the same time.

Choice Review

Fick (agronomy, Cornell), a practicing Christian, has written an insightful book describing how the Bible views the stewardship of the Earth and how this view should impact modern agricultural practices. Fick has three major themes: the Earth is the Lord's; it was given into the stewardship of the human race; and humankind will be held accountable for the care of Earth's resources. Fick discusses such diverse topics as environmentalism, soil and water conservation, the role of livestock, crop diversity, and corporate agriculture as opposed to farming as a way of life. There are even chapters on poverty and the inequity of food distribution in the world. He ends with a look at what must happen for the world to have agricultural sustainability in the years ahead. It is impossible to categorize this unique book, but it will be valuable to readers interested in the future of food production viewed from the perspective of biblical teachings. Fick uses biblical quotes extensively to emphasize his arguments and includes an index of biblical references at the end of the book. The extensive chapter notes and bibliography could make this volume useful for academic curricula or for the start of further research. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
