Choice Review

This is a good, bad book. Although written clearly, with awareness of the intellectual currents of which it speaks, and offering discussion of many contemporary issues, it does not offer the right intellectual weight for its themes. The work of Edward Said, the Palestinian activist and literary critic, demands the branching of themes in two: the Palestinian and Israeli political/cultural conflict and, in intimate relation to that in Said's work, the manner to view culture and the political demand that culture places on its intellectuals. Hart (Duke Univ.) investigates not only the debate between Said and Michael Waltzer, but themes in Marx, Nietzsche, Gramsci, Camus, Foucault, Chomsky, et al. The author admits being sympathetic to Said's position, but that is not a problem. Rather, it is that Hart does not have a deep understanding of Islam or Judaism, so he understands their political culture in a superficial manner in relation to what he does know: the often reworked interpretations of such fathers of postmodernity as Marx and Nietzsche. A fashionable performance at a high level, the work does not offer real understanding, since it is not philosophical enough to handle the cultural problem nor adequately knowledgeable to handle the Israeli/ Palestinian conflict.
