The past 25 years have witnessed an escalating discussion on the role of spirituality within health care. The 19 chapters of this book focus on three major areas: the theoretical aspects of religion, research on religion as it relates to nursing, and selected religious traditions including Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, the religions of Native populations, and "nonreligious spiritualities." The examination of the definitions and concepts of religion, spirituality, and religious practice is scholarly, well documented, and complex. The authors argue that it is critical to study the intersection between religion/spirituality and health care and nursing. They believe that this subject receives too little emphasis in nursing textbooks and nursing research; accordingly, they provide a review of the research in this area to support the need for more study. The chapters that focus on the theoretical and research aspects would be of interest primarily to scholars and researchers. Practicing and future nurses would be more interested in the chapters that examine cultural and religious traditions along with beliefs about health and illness, and how these beliefs/traditions affect health decision making and how they can be impacted by nursing practice.
