Monroe Kristen Renwick :

Kristen Renwick Monroe heads the University of California at Irvine Interdisciplinary Center for the Scientific Study of Ethics and Morality and is author of The Hand of Compassion: Portraits of Moral Choice during the Holocaust and The Heart of Altruism: Perceptions of a Common Humanity. Ronald B. Miller is Clinical Professor of Medicine Emeritus at the University of California, Irvine, and a member of the UCI Stem Cell Research Center Advisory Committee. Jerome Tobis is Research Professor and Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of California, Irvine.

Stem cell research and its potential for novel therapies is one of the most exciting areas of biomedical science today. Yet the origin and use of stem cells has, of course, been a source of great controversy. To frame this debate, Monroe, Miller, and Tobis (all, Univ. of California, Irvine) have compiled an excellent collection of balanced essays discussing the various aspects of the stem cell controversy. This collection follows a stem cell policy conference held at the Irvine campus in 2004. Contributors discussed the scientific definition and therapeutic uses of stem cells, and the associated religious and ethical issues. The book also addresses the political debate about allowing stem cell research, as well as public funding, particularly in reference to Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Act. All chapters are understandable to a lay audience. The book should serve as a valuable reference for undergraduate courses that use the stem cell debate as an in-depth case study in modern biomedical ethics, although recent scientific breakthroughs threaten to render portions of the book outdated.
