Offering the first comprehensive study of Guillaume de Machaut's vast corpus of text and music, the 18 essays in this collection explore the author's engagement with the ethical, political, and aesthetic concerns of his time. Building on interdisciplinary interest in Machaut, this collection broadens discussion of his work by exploring overlapping interests in his poetry and music; addressing lesser-studied writings; offering fresh perspectives on lyric, authorial voice, and performance; and engaging more critically with his reception by medieval bookmakers, modern editors, and the music industry. The result is a promising map for future research in the field that will be of interest to students and specialists alike.

Choice Review

This volume collects essays by leading scholars of Machaut, both in the US and in Europe. McGrady (French literature, Univ. of Virginia) and Bain (music, Dalhousie Univ., Canada) state that in putting the book together they had three goals: "to bring new perspectives to the field"; to present "a truly multi-disciplinary approach"; and "to address topics and texts underrepresented in Machaut studies." In recent years Machaut has come into his own, his poem Voir dit having been chosen to represent medieval poetry for the CAPE (Computer Adaptive Placement Exams) and Agregation exams in 2002. The present work is divided into five sections: "Machaut in Perspective"; "Select Works in Disciplinary Dialogue"; "Situating Machaut's Music"; "Contextualizing Machaut's Literature"; and "Tradition and Reception." Each section comprises three to five essays on the topic, amply illustrated with figures and tables. The book concludes with a 19-page bibliography of Machaut's music, a discography, primary texts, and critical works. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty. C. E.
