This valuable study raises issues that transcend the Vietnam War. Although the Russian Meyerhold and the Germans Brecht and Piscator brought the "reality" of societal events to the stage in the 1920s and 1930s with films and photographs, by the 1960s and 1970s such documents were seen as subjectively created artifacts. The creators of Vietnam protest plays sought new ways to bring the war to the stage and to use the stage as a vehicle for social change. This discussion of the methods employed in these plays helps readers examine the relationship of theater to the larger world. Alter (German, Univ. of Florida) also explores the impact of a nation's history on its theater as she analyzes plays from the US, France, Germany, England, and Vietnam. The author's feminist observations provide further insights. Recommended as an excellent discussion of the aesthetics of theater. Extensive notes. Upper-division undergraduate and up. R.
