Choice Review

In a collection of original essays there is often a great uneveness from the best to the worst. This volume is an exception to the rule; all the essays here are clearly of outstanding scholarship. Benedict's introduction offers an excellent overview of the growth and general character of French cities and urban life. The collection surveys the interaction of urban society with the rise of the modern state. Essays suggest new methods for reconstructing the life courses and experiences of ordinary townspeople and chart changes in urban and social structures and governing institutions. Well footnoted, with an up-to-date bibliography, this is a work for advanced students with an interest in early modern France, as well as social and urban history. -W. R.
