The lives of many of the nineteenth century's most notable women of science are presented in English for the first time in this companion volume to Ladies in the Laboratory: American and British Women in Science . Author Notes

Mary R.S. Creese is a former research chemist and has numerous publications in the field of the history of women scientists. Thomas M. Creese has taught mathematics at the University of Kansas since 1964.

A companion volume to Ladies in the Laboratory?: American and British Women in Science, 1800-1900: A Survey of Their Contributions to Research (CH, Oct'98), this volume includes 177 European women, from 12 different countries, whose journal publications are listed in the (London) Royal Society's Catalogue of Scientific Papers, 1800-1900. Organized by nationality, these encyclopedic biographies consider both the life history and the actual scientific achievements of women working in the fields (as grouped in the first volume) of biological and medical sciences, mathematical and physical sciences, and social sciences. The individual biographies are both fascinating and informative: most of these women were intellectual and social pioneers, prevailing against the mores of their times and significant obstacles. One of the most helpful features of the book is the number of graphs comparing the distribution of women authors by country, by field, by decade and, comparatively, by all fields and countries in the entire period. An appendix offers updated information about the few American and British women collected since the publication of the first volume and a complete bibliography.
