Scott Kennedy is Associate Professor, Departments of East Asian Languages & Cultures and Political Science, and Director, Research Center for Chinese Politics and Business, Indiana University. He is author of The Business of Lobbying in China (Harvard University Press, 2005) and editor of China Cross Talk: The American Debate over China Policy Since Normalization, A Reader (Rowman & Littlefield, 2003). His current research projects are on the growing role of Chinese industry and government in global governance and on the evolution of corporate political activity in China.

Choice Review

Citing the lack of cross-national comparative research regarding China's political economy, the studies collected in this volume isolate a variety of issues, which are divided into two broad areas dealing with economic reform and interest groups. The purpose of these studies is to "demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of cross-national comparison." Although China's multiple economic systems (command in some sectors, capitalist in others, and many in between) make it difficult to compare China's political economy with those of capitalist countries, the established China experts contributing to this work offer important new insights and identify profitable directions for future research. While there is disagreement regarding the best framework for comparison--developmental states, communism-in-transition, other large countries, smaller countries, advanced industrial states--in a globalized economic world, all nations are connected, and the only way to comprehend the meaning of those connections is through comparative research. This work makes this abundantly clear, providing a wide range of examples from regulation and welfare to business lobbying, banking, and the automotive sector. In each, the benefits of using a comparative approach are clearly demonstrated. For anyone wanting to understand China in a global context, this is an excellent place to begin.
