From the European Historical Dictionaries series, this volume covers French history and culture, with emphasis on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Choice Review

Raymond's dictionary seeks to illuminate France's rise, decline, and important role in world affairs and culture. Focused on France's present situation, it endeavors to explain why France still matters. The contemporary emphasis is the dictionary's greatest strength. Nearly 80 percent of its entries treat 19th- and 20th-century topics. Coverage is fullest for issues in postwar politics and culture (e.g., decolonization and popular culture); medieval and early modern topics get relatively short shrift. Useful features include a map of regions, a list of monarchs and presidents, a list of abbreviations and acronyms, and a 60-page topically arranged bibliography.
