Writing Marginality in Modern French Literature explores how cultural centres require the peripheral, the outlawed, and the deviant in order to define and bolster themselves. It analyses the hierarchies of cultural value which inform the work of six modern French writers: the exoticist Pierre Loti; Paul Gauguin, whose Noa Noa enacts European fantasies about Polynesia; Proust, who analyses such exemplary figures of exclusion and inclusion as the homosexual and the xenophobe; Montherlant, who claims to subvert colonialist values in La Rose de sable; Camus, who pleads an alienating detachment from the cultures of both metropolitan France and Algeria; and Jean Genet. Crucially Genet, who was typecast as France's moral pariah, in charting Palestinian statelessness in his last work, Un Captif amoureux (1986), reflects ethically on the dispossession of the Other and the violence inherent in the West's marginalisation of cultural difference.

Hughes (Univ. of London, UK) explores the conflicting inner paradoxes exposed when the six French writers featured (Loti, Gauguin, Proust, Montherlant, Camus, and Genet) either espouse a non-Western culture or take a stand against Western culture. From Pierre Loti's Aziyade (1879) to Albert Camus' The First Man, French writers showed increasing consciousness of the ambiguities of colonialism. Loti promoted the exotic female in Japan, Turkey, and Senegal. Paul Gauguin committed erotic aggressions in Polynesia. Marcel Proust, in Hughes's brilliant reading of Remembrance of Things Past, considered homosexuality a disturbingly alluring metropolitan orientalism. Henry de Montherlant withheld a 1932 anticolonial novel about Morocco until 1968 in order not to embarrass France. Camus, whose parents were part of forced French immigration to Algeria, relived the bonding of colonials with North Africa, seeing them as victims. Jean Genet, an Arafat acquaintance who embraced the Palestinian cause, still recognized that he was a spectator in their struggle. Hughes's readings basically follow postmodern and postcolonial critical strategies. All academic collections, but most useful to researchers and graduate students, since Hughes uses French editions exclusively, and some of them are not available in translation. M.
