With succinct three to six-page entries, military historians Kuehn and Holden offer their take on 100 disasters, presented in chronological order. They begin with the 1457 BCE battle of Megiddo that pitted the kingdoms of Canaan against their Egyptian rulers. The most recent disastrous conflict is the U.S.-led Iraqi Freedom operation that concluded in 2014. The entries generally include sections containing a description of the warring parties, background information, battle plans, details of the battle, and a conclusion. Each chapter ends with suggestions for further research. This single-volume work includes many helpful maps and other illustrations. A shortcoming of the book is the admitted bias toward Western conflicts occurring in the past few centuries; most of the entries cover this period. In the final analysis, The 100 Worst Military Disasters will be of interest to general readers and students of military history, including those seeking a solid starting point for further investigation into individual conflicts or common aspects of military misfortune.
