In persuading the Supreme Court that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry, the LGBT rights movement has achieved its most important objective of the last few decades. Throughout its history, the marriage equality movement has been criticized by those who believe marriage rights were a conservative cause overshadowing a host of more important issues. Now that nationwide marriage equality is a reality, everyone who cares about LGBT rights must grapple with how best to promote the interests of sexual and gender identity minorities in a society that permits same-sex couples to marry. This book brings together 12 original essays by leading scholars of law, politics, and society to address the most important question facing the LGBT movement today: What does marriage equality mean for the future of LGBT rights?

Carlos A. Ball is Distinguished Professor of Law and Judge Frederick Lacey Scholar at the Rutgers University School of Law. An expert in family and constitutional law, he has written several books on LGBT rights, including Same-Sex Marriage and Children, and The Morality of Gay Rights.

Choice Review

The 2015 Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage is the starting point for Ball's edited volume on the future of LGBT rights. The contributors--law school and social science professors--are well versed in researching LGBT issues. The first section of the book looks at the impact of marriage equality on the coalition that supported it. The authors describe a mature LGBT movement with a large pending agenda. The second section, the best, addresses urgent LGBT topics that have not been brought forward in print before. Particularly insightful is the focus on the growing population of LGBT elders who are having to go "back inside the closet," because of the lack of protections and services targeting their needs. The section on children of LGBT parents points out that marriage equality fails to address issues associated with parentage, such as non-marital families and racial or economic inequality. The pervasiveness of hostile attitudes against LGBT individuals is also given a context and an explanation. The final section provides insightful information on the experiences of other developed nations. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
