"The Viability of the Rhetorical Tradition reconsiders the relationship between rhetorical theory, practice, and pedagogy. Continuing the line of questioning begun in the 1980s, contributors examine the duality of a rhetorical canon in determining if past practice can make us more (or less) able to address contemporary concerns. Also examined is the role of tradition as a limiting or inspiring force, rhetoric as a discipline, rhetoric's contribution to interest in civic education and citizenship, and the possibilities digital media offer to scholars of rhetoric.

Choice Review

The excellent essays in this collection address the historical underpinnings of rhetoric as a discipline. One of the volume's particular strengths is that the contributors come from both the communication and English disciplines. By incorporating voices from both of these approaches to rhetoric, the volume presents the diversity of the field while remaining relevant to the particularities of those who find themselves situated firmly on one end of the communication/English rhetorical continuum. The editors present the essays in two sections: the first looks at historical and contemporary approaches to the rhetorical canon; the second examines the ways rhetoric can be conceived and fostered in contemporary society. Steven Mailloux provides an excellent summary of the collection in his afterword, pointing out that throughout the volume one sees "the importance of the classical to rhetorical studies as a period within its canonical history and as an intellectual touchstone for its theoretical development as an (inter)discipline." ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
