Alisa Freedman is Associate Professor of Japanese Literature and Film at the University of Oregon. Laura Miller is the Ei'ichi Shibusawa-Seigo Arai Professor of Japanese Studies and Professor of Anthropology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Christine R. Yano is Professor and Chair of Anthropology at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.

Choice Review

Once readers get past the too-cute cover (which actually makes a point discussed in the book), they will find a serious contribution to intercultural studies and gender sensitivities--scholarly, well written, and often moving. Several of the dozen authors use technical terminology from sociology and psychology but convert them into powerful tools of analysis: "code-switching," "image-text," and "contact zone." The use of specialists' tools is carried out with graceful contextualization, producing immediate recognition in almost any reader. The chapters vary in interest, of course, but the collection will open eyes, minds, and hearts among anyone who gives them a fair hearing, and cause new sensitivities to blossom not only with regard to Japanese women but, perhaps even more importantly, to both men and women who care about civil discourse and kind behavior between cultures and genders. Perhaps the easiest point of entry comes at the end, when a pioneer (Yoko McClair) writes a very personal and powerful memoir describing her passages through the system of international educational exchange and multicultural living in the difficult years of the mid-20th century.
