Alli has prepared a guidance document for legislative bodies, administrative agencies, labor organizations, and employers who are responsible for establishing and maintaining programs for protecting worker health and safety. After an overview, chapters discuss policy issues, controls and their implementation, surveillance, prevention, and training. The coverage is broad but abstract, and a longer book with examples from existing occupational health and safety programs would have had a broader appeal. Each discussion topic is a digest of specific Conventions and Recommendations issued by the International Labor Organization (ILO), and researchers will consult the primary documents, available from the ILO Web site . Annexes include a glossary, excerpts from several key Conventions and Recommendations, a bibliography, and a short outline of the ILO's SafeWork program. The entire SafeWork initiative and the International Occupational Safety and Health Information Center, also available from the ILO Web site, provide needed technical details to policy makers, regulatory agencies, and employers. SafeWork sponsors research on prevention and control of workplace hazards, compiles data on international work-related injuries and illnesses, and provides technical assistance, especially for developing countries.
