With the rapid, global expansion of the tourism industry, a series of subdisciplines has developed, among which is "sports tourism." As in most professional subgenres, revenue and the global media have been prime ingredients in growing this specialty into an area for study and research. Sport Tourism provides a comprehensive introduction to the subject, primarily from a European/global perspective. This is akin to an American trying to understand the difference between "rock" and "world" music. Although the basic presentation is complete and well organized, some of the nuances of sports tourism, from an American perspective, may have a slightly different resonance. The volume is organized into three major components. The first offers an overview and theoretical construct of the relationship between sports and tourism. The second contains a dynamic discussion of the relationships and interactions of sports tourism and the economy, environment, and physical health trends. The third component explores the organization of sports tourism today and in the future. Clearly organized and written, this book is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate students and also provides a fine introduction for those marketing/sales professionals contemplating sports tie-ins as a part of their overall marketing/sales strategies.
