LeBesco and Naccarato (both, Marymount Manhattan College) assembled a dream team of food and culture scholars for this definitive handbook on the topic. Based in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Denmark, and Italy, the contributors represent not just food studies but also bioethics, ecology, cultural history, anthropology, architecture, childhood studies, communications, museum studies, and many other areas of interest. The book is divided into four parts--"Vicarious Consumption: Media and Communication," "Visceral Practices: Material Cultures of Eating," "Aesthetics of Food," and "Sociopolitical Considerations: Contemporary Debates and Trends"--but there is considerable overlap. The result is a comprehensive collection that, as the editors write in the introduction, "takes into account the numerous intersections that make up ... popular culture and the role of food across that diverse landscape." Though they vary in accessibility of writing style, contributions are high quality and well researched. Reference lists are extensive. Valuable as a classroom reader and for scholars new to the field, this is a welcome multivoice complement to the groundbreaking Bite Me: Food in Popular Culture (CH, Oct'09, 47-0933), by Fabio Parasecoli, who is one of the contributors to the present volume.
