This study is based on the findings of the Global Integrity Project, and brings together scientists and thinkers from around the world to examine the combined problems of threatened and unequal human wellbeing, degradation of the ecosphere and unsustainable economies. The book: examines the history, philosophy, economics and ethics of the concept and practice of ecological integrity; explores how integrity can be measured; and offers recommendations for reversing ecological degradation while promoting social and economic justice and welfare.

David Pimentel is professor of ecology and agricultural science at Cornell University. Laura Westra is Barbara B. and Bertram J. Cohn Professor of Environmental Studies at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. Reed F. Noss is president and chief scientist for Conservation Science, Inc., president of the Society for Conservation Biology, and an international lecturer on biodiversity topics. He lives in Corvallis, Oregon.

Choice Review

This excellent and challenging book resulted from an interdisciplinary project to explore the implications of the concept of ecological integrity, the idea that coherent natural ecosystems support life on Earth and that human activity is disrupting the function of these systems. The book includes essays from scientists, philosophers, economists, and policy experts, linked together into conceptually related groups with introductory passages by the editors. The concept of ecological integrity is controversial, and there is no attempt to conceal this from the reader. Some of these controversies run through the entire book. They include difficulties in the definition and measurement of ecological integrity; ethical tensions between biocentric viewpoints and equity issues; and practical problems in convincing humans to change behaviors that have worked in the past. In the opinion of this reviewer the difficulties are not fully resolved, but we are given a window into an ongoing and critically important dialogue between thinkers who have traditionally ignored each other. Perhaps the most convincing conclusion of the book is that we can no longer afford old-fashioned intellectual insularity; the problems we face are too far-reaching. Highly recommended.
