In Alexander Crummell: A Study of Civilization and Discontent (1989) Moses did more than any other scholar to revive interest in this brilliant and influential African American theologian, missionary, and intellectual. In this new work Moses reprints W.E.B. Du Bois's classic ^D["Of Alexander Crummell^D]" (1903) and a wide-ranging collection of Crummell's letters, reports, sermons, and articles. These offer glimpses into Crummell's years in Liberia (1853-1872), his establishment and pastorship of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Washington, DC, (1879-1894), and his last years writing, lecturing, and challenging the racial leadership of Booker T. Washington. Crummell's thought merged disciplined puritanical Protestantism with black protest. Crummell's writings bristle with overt hostility toward mulattoes. According to Moses, Crummell was not ^D["the frail, neurasthenic martyr^D]" Du Bois described but ^D["a combative, irascible person who needlessly made enemies with his sarcastic tongue and pen and who was accused of an icily contemptuous manner.^D]" Scholars will regret that Moses failed to edit a complete edition of Crummell's works, one in keeping with the tenets of modern documentary editing. Nonetheless, they will be pleased that there is now available a representative selection of Crummell's writings. Undergraduate; graduate; faculty.

This well-edited work reestablishes the importance of a leading African American thinker. A 19th-century Episcopal minister, reformer, and pan-Africanist, Crummell had a major influence on subsequent black activists, particularly W.E.B. Dubois. This collection, which includes sermons, letters, and unpublished lecture notes, displays his passion for racial justice and disdain for emotional religiosity, also tracing his deep fascination with Africa and Africa's relevance for black Americans. Moses (director, Afro-American Studies, Boston Univ.) succeeds in restoring Crummell to his rightful place as a major influence.
