Human beings have been concerned about nature and their place in it for millennia. Disquiet about the consequences of human action on the natural environment date back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. The efforts of the green movement can be traced back to the nineteenth century. In this period, individuals, groups, and organizations began campaigning for the conservation and preservation of natural areas and the protection of wildlife species. Efforts to combat pollution also began. It was not until the 1960s, however, that the green movement in its more modern incarnation emerged. The green movements that arose at this time maintained the concerns with conservation, preservation, and industrial pollution held by earlier generations, but added to their agenda new issues, including justice, equality, participatory democracy, and sustainability. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Green Movement provides a detailed and comprehensive overview of green parties and movements, green issues, and green concepts. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on countries in the world where green parties or proto-parties have formed, green movement organizations, major international environmental conferences, and green concepts. This useful reference will be greatly valued by students, academics, journalists, and policymakers alike.

Miranda Schreurs, a specialist in environmental politics and policy, is the director of the Environmental Policy Research Center of the Free University of Berlin. Elim Papadakis is an Executive Director at the Australian Research Council and holds a Professorship in European Studies at the Australian National University.

Almost half again as long as the first (1998) edition, the contents of this title in the publisher's Historical Dictionaries of Religions, Philosophies, and Movements series reflect the growing interest in the political and human concerns and actions of the green movement worldwide. The volume begins with a list of acronyms and a chronology of events that have had a significant impact on some aspect of the environment and life on Earth. The chronology begins in 1642 (156 years earlier than the first edition) and ends with mention of Al Gore's 2007 Oscar for An Inconvenient Truth. The 40-page introduction examines the influential writers and fundamental principles of the movement as well as providing a brief history. The dictionary entries comprise two-thirds of the book, with definitions and descriptions of organizations (League of Conservation Voters), agencies (Center for International Environmental Law), significant persons (Saro-Wiwa, Kenule), movements (Fair Trade Movement), political parties (Citizens Party), and specialized vocabulary and concepts (Gross national product), along with brief summaries of green activity in more than 40 countries and regions. The political nature of environmental issues is reflected in concepts like Common-property regimes, Polluter pays principle, and Postmaterialism. In-text references to other entries are in bold type. Many definitions and descriptions need these cross-references to link concepts. To minimize redundancy, there are a number of see references throughout. In addition there is a substantial bibliography with its own table of contents and introduction. These are followed by a list of professional journals and subject- specific references on green issues, green movements, green parties within countries, and green policies and politics within countries and lists of Web sites representing the various topics found throughout. More than 20 environmental databases are briefly described. As citizen action is needed to confront and solve many issues with an environmental base, access to definitions and explanations is increasingly required of an educated electorate. The work begins with a chronology that becomes increasingly complex with each passing year. An introductory environmental essay tracks the worldwide expansion of the Green political movement and includes descriptions of the preeminent Green movement literature and its place within the field of environmental studies. These sources offer students comprehensive explanations of the development of political thought and theories within the movement. The A-Z section covers subject categories within the discipline and includes entries on the Green movement and related politics in individual countries. The expanded bibliography is a working tool with extensive informative listings, and it even includes categories for professional journals, think tanks, databases, portals, websites, educational resources, news sources, NGOs, environmental movements, Green parties, global conferences, international agreements, and documentaries.
