Summary
Corporate bankruptcy is becoming an increasingly important topic in today's turbulent environment. The bankruptcy decision can be a matter of life and death for the organization dealing with distress, but the impact of the phenomenon is magnified by the variety of business relationships in which companies typically are involved. Bankruptcy thus potentially affects customers, supply chain or network partners, managerial and nonmanagerial employees, landlords and many others in addition to the distressed organization. Understanding the bankruptcy process, therefore, can facilitate best-practice development and the protection of the organization's interests both before and after a bankruptcy petition. This book does not attempt to provide advice; each case is unique and should be addressed by competent legal counsel. Rather, this work is intended to provide an overview of the fundamental principles and processes of both Chapter 11 reorganizations and Chapter 7 liquidations, incorporating examples drawn from relevant legal decisions, research findings, and common experience to highlight the issues involved and provide a basis for discussion. In addition, the text covers the bankruptcy law implications of a number of special topic areas, including small business bankruptcies, governance issues, contractual agreements and obligations such as franchising and collective bargaining agreements, and newly emerging issues surrounding the use of derivatives.

Summary
Regrettably, 80% of small to medium-sized businesses fail within 2 years of their inception. Ninety percent of businesses close after 10 years of operation. Although there may be many reasons, the lack of a strategic, actionable, and measurable marketing plan is often the underlying cause. Marketing a business in today's extremely competitive marketplace is difficult at best. Money is tight. Customers are more demanding. Moreover, the vast array of strategic and promotional alternatives available to business owners and marketers can be perplexing, confusing, and frustrating.

Summary
Economic principles inform good business decision making. Although economics is sometimes dismissed as a discourse of practical relevance to only a relatively small circle of academicians and policy analysts who call themselves economists, sound economic reasoning benefits any manager of a business, whether they are involved with production and operations, marketing, finance, or corporate strategy. Along with enhancing decision making, the field of economics provides a common language and framework for comprehending and communicating phenomena that occur within a business, as well as between a business and its environment.

Summary
Corporate governance is one of the hottest topics in the business world now, as it always is in times of stress. Some of the recently discovered scandals and corporate failures can be traced back to corporate governance failures. Boards of directors must share some of the blame in many of the failures. Something was not working right, even in some boardrooms full of highly qualified individuals. Boards have been criticized for being too large or too small, for having members who are not independent or who lack the requisite knowledge, or for enabling "bad apple" directors who are inattentive, weak, and even self-serving, among other things. But that is not at all what this book is about. In this book we show how seemingly ideal boards, those with "best practice" size, composition, and structure, can still fail to provide good governance simply because they fall victim to problems inherent in all groups.
