Smart Financial Management is written primarily for high-level nonfinancial managers, but in that context the book would serve as an excellent reference or even as a required source for graduate-level financial management courses. Sihler (Univ. of Virginia) and Davis (corporate finance and banking consultant) write in a pragmatic style; for example, their discussion of cost of capital is not laced with countless formulas as is the case in many finance books. Rather, the discussion focuses on the chronology and relationships of decisions concerning asset purchases, debt service, taxes, and dividends versus reinvestment. Additionally, the book covers forecasting, ratio analysis, and the three major asset areas of receivables, inventory, and physical plant.
