Safe Passages is a valuable sequel to Road Ecology, edited by R. Forman et al. (CH, Jul'03, 40-6438). The earlier work helped to focus attention on the negative impacts of highway infrastructure on roadside natural environments ranging from erosion and vegetation changes to water contamination and wildlife-vehicle interactions. This new work synthesizes current and emerging mitigation techniques for diminishing the impacts of roads on terrestrial and aquatic species. Topics include the disruption of wildlife habitat connectivity, overpass and underpass crossing structures, fencing, highway design/construction, and water barriers. Chapters provide valuable information on effective transportation corridor planning, the development of public participation programs, and the promotion of successful communication between public agencies and conservation-minded stakeholders. Contributing authors offer a series of case studies, insights, challenges, and solutions for establishing effective partnerships, i.e., wildlife crossings in Banff, Alberta; Tijeras Canyon in New Mexico; Interstate 75 and the Florida panther; and highway planning in Vermont, Montana, and Arizona.
