Silver, Strong, and Perini have written the book every classroom teacher has been waiting for: a repertoire of research-based instructional strategies useful at all levels of student experience. This text covers 20 strategies (as well as dozens of variations) organized into groups of instruction: mastery/memory, comprehension, self-expression/creativity, interpersonal skills, and "four-type strategies" incorporating the use of the four strategies previously mentioned. The strategies vary, from more traditional strategies such as direct instruction, compare and contrast, and reciprocal learning, to more novel approaches such as pattern maker, New American lecture, and community circle. Each strategy is introduced, explained, and demonstrated. Suggestions for planning, examples, and other resources are included. Implementation should be simple, as the authors go from implementation of the known strategy, e.g., cooperative learning groups, to the novel addition to or change in that known strategy. For example, in their explanation of the teams-games-tournament strategy, the authors explain that it is a strategy in which study teams are formed from cooperative learning activities, leading to academic tournaments.
