The concept of "heritage" covers the elements of the world that we feel are worth preserving for future generations. This book examines the wide variety of immovable or place-based heritage sites that make up a cultural and national heritage, from historic areas and buildings to the wilderness. Australian perceptions and approaches are discussed and compared to those in the US, New Zealand, and several western European countries.

This comprehensive volume uniquely integrates the management of natural, cultural, and indigenous heritage in one interdisciplinary global synthesis. The author's goals are to convey his own enthusiasm for heritage issues, reach the university audiences that study heritage formally, and target all communities interested in defining and knowing their own heritages. Though its primary case studies and foci are Australian (Aplin is from Macquarie Univ.), all but two chapters deal with the global picture--what heritage is, what it should be, and how contested views about heritage can bring about larger understandings. Aplin makes three major contributions: a bridging of the artificial divide between "natural" and "cultural" heritage, an appreciation of the importance of scale in understanding heritage issues, and an examination of the current debates among stakeholders within the heritage professions. Statutory frameworks as well as the impact and importance of heritage vis-a-vis economic considerations are also covered. Important comparative national case studies include the heritage management situations in China, the US, France, the UK/Ireland, and South Africa, among others.
