Considerations of the effect of trauma on heritage sites.The essays in this volume address the displacement of natural and cultural heritage caused by disasters, whether they be dramatic natural impacts or terrible events unleashed by humankind, including holocaust and genocide. Disasters can be natural or human-made, rapid or slow, great or small, yet the impact is effectively the same; nature, people and cultural heritage are displaced or lost. Yet while heritage and place are at risk from disasters, in time,sites of suffering are sometimes reframed as sites of memory; through this different lens these "difficult" places become heritage sites that attract tourists. Ranging widely chronologically and geographically, the contributors explore the impact of disasters, trauma and suffering on heritage and sense of place, in both theory and practice. This most recent volume in the "Heritage Matters" series, which is concerned with contemporary threats to the cultural heritage sector, addresses the impact of disasters on natural and cultural heritage in terms of theory, policy reactions, and popular reactions. The authors describe a broad range of disasters that affect natural, cultural, and intangible heritage in a range of international contexts, and are experienced by diverse peoples. The editors' introduction opens with a definition, impact, remembrance, and commemoration of, and reaction to, disasters. The following interdisciplinary case studies are grouped in four sections: "Histories and Tourism," seven chapters; "Trauma, Confinement and Loss," seven chapters; "Lived Realities, Local Experience," nine chapters; and six chapters in "Displaced Natural Heritage." The "Endpiece" reflects on the political economy of 21st-century responses to disaster and identifies several themes: the production of nature; understanding vulnerability; disaster planning and response; and an economy of "affect." This last point refers to an important theme in the volume: global landscapes of memory, trauma, and loss, resulting in voices of pain, anguish, and anger. While the minute script is challenging, each essay is well referenced with excellent illustrations integrated into the arguments. Summing Up: Recommended.
