The interdependence between tourism and the environment is examined by Holden (University of Luton, UK). Organized into seven chapters, the book adopts a system view of tourism that facilitates a multidisciplinary approach to understanding tourism. The author offers a concise overview of important issues such as environmental perceptions of tourists, environmental ethics, economics, environmental planning, and sustainability. A predominantly European-Western perspective is evident throughout, with little discussion on the Eastern view of environmental perceptions and ethics. The author restricted his review of environmental effects within the tourism literature and ignored a body of scientific literature on recreation impacts, despite striking similarities between tourism and recreation with respect to environmental impacts and their management. The book also omitted some key publications such as Agenda 21 for the Travel and Tourism Industry (1995) in the discussion of sustainabil ity and tourism. The "further readings" list at the end of each chapter seems redundant as the bibliography duplicates all references. Despite these shortcomings, this book will serve well as a primary undergraduate resource if supplementary readings are provided. Recommended for academic libraries.
