Judith A. Tyner, PhD, is Professor Emerita of Geography at California State University, Long Beach. She taught in the Geography Department for over 35 years, where she served as Department Chair and as Director of the Cartography/GIS Certificate Program from its inception until her retirement. While at California State Dr. Tyner taught beginning and advanced cartography, map reading and interpretation, history of cartography, and remote sensing. She is a member of the Association of American Geographers, the North American Cartographic Information Society, the Cartography and Geographic Information Society, and the California Map Society. She is the author of several textbooks, including Principles of Map Design , and over 30 articles.

Choice Review

This is a contemporary, utilitarian book on map reading. Maps have become ubiquitous, with data being displayed in map form on phones and computers, in electoral results, as well as on GPS units and in traditional print books and road atlases. More and more people use maps every day, but fewer and fewer individuals understand the strengths and weaknesses of maps and their inherent distortions. Tyner (emer., California State Univ.) draws attention to the elements of maps (scale, symbology, map projections, and coordinate systems) and clearly explains how the limitations of maps influence users' understanding of the world. The book contains 13 chapters (chapter 13 is an epilogue) and five appendixes. Part 1 covers the basics, including the importance of and distinctions between map reading, analysis, and interpretation; historical context in cartography; and the elements of maps. Part 2 focuses on maps for different purposes and their characteristics. Part 3 contains a short chapter illustrating how maps can be analyzed and the epilogue, which reiterates the limitations of maps and expresses cautions about future uses of maps. This is a concise introduction to a rich and complex topic, useful for an elementary map reading course. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates and general readers. --Edward J.
