Plants have colonized and modified the world's surface for the past 400 million years. In this book the authors demonstrate that an understanding of the role of vegetation in the terrestrial carbon cycle during this time can be gained by linking the key mechanistic elements of present day vegetation processes to models of the global climate during different geological eras. The resulting interactive simulations of climate and vegetation processes tie in with observable geological data supporting the validity of the authors' approach.

Beerling and Woodward (both, Univ. of Sheffield, UK) developed their book to synthesize carbon cycle processes within terrestrial ecosystems at different temporal and spatial scales throughout the past 400,000 years. Additionally, they provide information and conventional methods for studying interactions among vegetation, soil, and climate. Simulations were based on fundamental ecosystem processes (e.g., photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, nutrient dynamics). The authors placed the results in the context of global simulations of temperature over geological time in an effort to investigate the past from the present era. Data for the text were collected from two primary sources--published journals and field measurements--both applied in conjunction with strong theoretical and simulation models. Readers will learn about changing dynamics of atmospheric oxygen, temperature, and carbon dioxide during different geological eras. In addition, readers will understand relationships among atmospheric changes and current global climate change, carbon sequestration, and predicted warming.
