Choice Review

For this undergraduate guidebook the editors (rehabilitation and mental health counseling, Univ. of South Florida) have solicited chapter contributions from 30 educators and professionals. Part 1 discusses attitudes and values related to the human service professions as a career choice. The bulk of the work, part 2, comprises chapters addressing 18 human service professions including audiology, the branches of psychology, case management, marriage and family therapy, mediation, counseling, social work, special education, and public administration. Each chapter provides the history and development of the profession, clientele served, philosophical and theoretical background, real-world applications, field work, salary considerations, work settings, professional preparation, careers, professional organizations, and future outlook. For aspirants lacking graduate degrees, part 3 discusses areas of employment in the fields of behavioral and mental health, human resources, education, police work and public safety, and leisure and recreation. Part 4 addresses certification, licensure, registration, and accreditation, as well as professional codes of ethics and professional behavior. This valuable work would be improved by a subject index.
