Adding to the popular and practical "Fast Facts" series for nurses, this work aimed at student nurses enters a crowded field. Recent comparable titles include L. Payne's The Nursing Student's Guide to Clinical Success (2011) and the classic Mosby's Tour Guide to Nursing School by M. Chenevert (6th ed., 2010). This guide by Stabler-Haas (West Chester Univ.) sets itself apart in its direct, kind, and professional tone. It sounds like it is written by a student's favorite professor. The book covers much familiar ground (classroom success, study skills, test-taking tips, time management, clinical success, etc.) in an accessible way--without the caricatures and informal tone found in the Mosby work. Notably, it concludes with chapters about success beyond graduation. Though some of that content (job hunting and malpractice insurance) can be readily found elsewhere, the information on publishing, nursing certification, and graduate education is unique. One glaring omission, shared by Mosby's entry, is any discussion of the coping skills needed in the first year of employment. As the turnover rates are up to 60 percent for newly graduated nurses, it seems out of place to discuss graduate education and publishing without addressing the difficult first year.
