Human dignity, the ability to establish a sense of self-worth and self-respect and to enjoy the respect of others, is necessary for a fully realized life. Working with dignity is a fundamental part of achieving a life well-lived, yet the workplace often poses challenging obstacles because of mismanagement or managerial abuse. Defending dignity and realizing self-respect through work are key to workers' well-being; insuring the dignity of employees is equally important for organizations as they attempt to make effective use of their human capital. In this book Randy Hodson, a sociologist of work and organizational behavior, applies ethnographic and statistical approaches to this topic, offering both a richly detailed, inside look at real examples of dignity in action, and a broader analysis of the pivotal role of dignity at work.

Students of work and occupations are increasingly examining work as more than productivity or task performance. Hodson (sociology, Ohio State Univ.) argues that "working with dignity is an essential building block for a life well lived [and is] one of the most important challenges people face in their lives." His analysis centers on four worker strategies for defending and maintaining dignity (resistance, citizenship, development of autonomous but work-related meaning systems, and the development of coworker relations) and four challenges to dignity (mismanagement and abuse, overwork, restrictions on autonomy, and "contradictions of employee involvement"). Especially fascinating is the body of data Hodson provides analyzing workplace ethnographies. Appendix A provides a detailed description of data collection and analysis, which includes "108 cases from 86 published ethnographies"; the data set is included as Appendix B. Hodson carefully lays out the framework for analysis, including, as might be expected, contributions of Marx, Durkheim, and Weber. Strengths and limitations of the findings are dispassionately presented, leading to the conclusion that dignity does not just happen--it must be earned and negotiated within the dynamics of the workplace. The data assembled for analysis and the maturity of the eminently sociological analysis demand the widest circulation of this important volume.
