In this splendid book, Ruti (Univ. of Toronto) explores psychoanalysis since Freud in terms of a vital "art of living." The psychoanalytic art of living, the author argues, allows for an approach to the often-messy business of existence that both acknowledges and embraces contingency in the effort to rewrite fate (if necessary). In exploring such subtending themes as the relation of loss to creativity and the meaning of love, fantasy, and character development, Ruti stands in the tradition of humanist writers who have bridged the disciplinary gaps between philosophy, psychotherapy, and the human sciences, including, for example, Paul Goodman, Abraham Maslow, Alan Watts, and Rollo May. Ruti's place in that eminent company is well established. This book will appeal to humanists and philosophers as well as those interested in psychology and psychotherapy.
