Living organisms that inhabit the world's soils and sediments provide many useful services for people. A need for new knowledge about underground processes and biodiversity led to an international workshop run by the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE). Edited by Wall (Colorado State Univ.), this ten-chapter book, representing the work of 33 scientists, covers conservation biology topics and ecosystem services for a sustainable environment. Part 1 explains the need for a current review of the goods, services, and benefits that people receive from soil organisms, including contributions to food production, construction materials, carbon sequestration, water purification, bioremediation, and biological pest control. Individual chapters cover terrestrial soils, freshwater sediments, and marine sediments. Part 2 covers the vulnerability of organisms to the effects of human activities and to global climate change. The final three chapters draw connections between soil and sediment organisms and management practices and consider what is needed to receive the economic advantages without losing biodiversity. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
