Choice Review

In A New Foreign Policy, Sachs (Columbia Univ.) proposes a new direction for US foreign policy. He argues that US policymakers and the broader public must acknowledge that the US is no longer the sole superpower in the international system and that conducting US foreign policy through the lens of American exceptionalism must end. Sachs highlights the importance of international cooperation and international law, and proposes that the US needs to move from emphasis on military might to emphasis on sustainable development, with a focus on achieving prosperity for all. The author presents his argument in four parts. In part 1 he discuses the history and limits of American exceptionalism, and in part 2 he calls for a reevaluation of regime change as a US foreign policy goal and an end to US military involvement in the Middle East. In part 3 he warns that the Trump administration's economic policies will quicken the decline of the US. In the final part he provides suggestions for how to restore US diplomacy. He outlines ten priorities for a new American foreign policy, including better use of the United Nations, cooperation on new technology, and nuclear disarmament. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
